I disagree that moderate muslims do exist. Islam is an extreme ideology. Either a person is a muslim with all the obligations of a muslim, including armed jihad, or he is a kafir who only deserves to be killed.

The so called "moderates" are ardent supporters of Islam. Only, they have their own worldly interests which they do not want to be damaged, and hence their involvement in violence is not total. Which is why the poorer sections among the muslims mostly do the dirty work associated with violence, with the tacit approval of the much richer "moderate" sections.

The "moderates" also are among the apt fence sitters, with muffled or even open praises of extremism, or sometimes reluctant condemnation of violence, as and how it suits them.

There can be "moderate" islam, just as there is no moderate dose of cyanide or moderate level of cancer.
