Another question aboutReader comment on item: Bolstering Moderate Muslims Submitted by Ben Wilson (Australia), Apr 18, 2007 at 07:07 Dr. Pipes, You have defined the 'moderate' part of 'moderate Muslim' as someone who opposes Islamism. But what is the definition of the 'Muslim' part of 'moderate Muslim'? If, to qualify as a 'moderate Muslim' one must recognize the prophethood of Muhammed, 'moderate Muslim' may be an oxymoron - if Muhammed himself was an 'Islamist'. Demanding that Muslims become moderate may be simply to demand that they stop being Muslims. p.s. I was in the audience of your frequently interrupted speech at Melbourne University several years ago. Thank you for coming to Australia!

Daniel Pipes replies: "If, to qualify as a 'moderate Muslim' one must recognize the prophethood of Muhammed, 'moderate Muslim' may be an oxymoron - if Muhammed himself was an 'Islamist'." Muslims have always chosen what to emphasize and how to interpet it in Muhammad's life and they can do so now. The Islamists are doing so - why not the anti-Islamists? |
