Moderate Islam and a reformation

Reader comment on item: Bolstering Moderate Muslims

Submitted by Andria Switzer (Canada), Apr 17, 2007 at 23:30

I recommend you direct your readers to the writings of Irshad Manji and her book, The Trouble with Islam. While Manji is Canadian born and studiously Islamic, she has challenged traditionalists and fundamentalists to the core in the Islamic world. She lives protected 24- 7 and she is teaching now at Harvard, but will be featured on a show produced by or for PBS this week. In Canada she is on both Thursday eve on PBS and Sat eve on Global.

She raises the idea that moderate Islamists must actually read and question the Qu'ran, debate it and re-interpret it, bring new meaning to the teachings. She has an important historical perspective that Islam once celebrated itijah, struggling with ideas not swords. She is a valued and valiant contributor to the now world wide struggle to bring Islam into the modern world and reverse the trend that Islamists are taking Moslems into the past.(my summary not hers.)
