Remember "Voodoo Economics"? Here's some **ouzo** economics, courtesy of Ianus!

in response to reader comment: The EU hyperbureaucracy vs. Europe

**Ouzo** is a strong liquor distilled from raisins which Greeks like to drink on festive occasions, following which they have a contest to see who can smash the most crockery. The Greek Colonels tried to outlaw the custom but it was no use. Plates, cups, bowls all continued to be thrown to the floor in a noisy and joyous symphony of waste and destruction. It makes no sense but then neither do the economic theories of Ianus. 110 **billion** Euroes have no value, so intones Ianus. It's all just a trick to keep the precious Greeks in the Eurozone and the EU. Well, they can play a "trick" like that on me any time! It's not the tax-evading, overpaid and underproductive Greeks who are "hypercorrupt" but the honest, industrious and now vastly put-upon citizens of Germany and Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg. The 1993 Maastricht Treaty created the EU and it was entirely voluntary and approved by referenda within each member nation. Members Denmark and the UK were allowed to remain outside the Eurozone. Lucky them! They don't have to "pony up" for Greece's mismanagement. One true thing is that all member countries would like to bolt a Eurozone that is weighed down by Greece--and the other countries whose brief prosperity was based not on a genuinely productive economy but by a housing bubble such as prevailed in Spain, Portugal and Ireland.
