I search in vain for the word **enosis** through this twisted and biased collection of half-truths. To bring about a merger of Cyprus and Greece, Nicos Sampson did organize a coup to overthrow the government of Archbishop Makarios (the world's only Cypriot, neither Turkish nor Greek), forcing President Makarios to flee for his life to the British base at Akrotiri. But the British were willing to do no more than offer sanctuary. The Turkish community found it had to look to Ankara for its protection, the 1960 Treaty being a dead letter.
