in response to reader comment: Turks vs. thinking

The Cypriot National Guard proved much better at organizing a **coup** against one defenseless priest than at fighting another army. But it failed even to do that successfully. Makarios got away. So, since that paragon of truth and virtue Nikos Sampson PROMISED--cross his heart and hope-to-die--that he wouldn't try it again, everything on Cyprus should just have gone back to **status quo ante** as if the **coup** and attempted assassination had never happened? Yes, that's a funny idea but it seems the Turks didn't get the joke. And since the topic is parallels with Israel and its neighbors, Syria, Egypt and Jordan all lost parts of their territory, at least for a time, following an unsuccessful aggression in 1967.
