Yes we cannot compare the Greeks in Cyprus with Palestinians in Gaza

Dear Dr Pipes: Your Turkish reader Tugba Basaran Akmazoglu asks how we can compare Greeks in Cyprus with Palestinians in Gaza. We indeed cannot. There are many reasons:

1. The entire force of Islamists around the world is standing in support of Palestinians in Gaza. Not many Christian nations are fighting and killing in favor of greeks.

2. Greeks never had a leader like the terrorist-and-hijacker-turned-nobel-prize-winner Yasser Arafat.

3. In spite of the forced Turkish occupation, the greeks (unlike Palestinians) have not converted northern Cyprus into a fireball.

4. Jews of Israel are fighting to protect about 10000 sq kms of land that was theirs since the beginning of monotheistic religions. Islamists are fighting to add 10000 additional sq kms to their millions of sq kilometers.

5. Certain friends of the Palestinians have vowed to completely destroy Israel and throw her into the sea. No friends of Greeks have exhibited any such intentions about Turks.

6. Christian friends of Greeks have been known to fight to defend non-Christians (in Bosnia for example). No friend of Palestinians has ever raised an arm to defend any body who is not an Islamist.

7. Israel is a democratic multi-religion and multi-cultural society. Turkey like all its brothers is 98% monolithic.

The list can go on and on. But, yes, no one should compare the Greeks of Cyprus with the Palestinians of Gaza.
