...in that, unlike Greece, it has never laid claim to ALL of Cyprus. Of the perhaps 200,000 Greek Cypriots who were driven out or fled the fighting in 1974, more than half eventually returned to their homes which were outside the area permanently occupied by the Turkish Army after the fighting ended. The 80,000 figure is of those permanently dispossessed. Now, the Greek Colonels who overthrew the elected government in 1967 were humorless but practical men who had sense enough not to provoke the old enemy Turkey. Not so the excitable (some would say insane) Phaedon Gazikis. If he didn't order Sampson to stage a **coup** on Cyprus he certainly inspired it! Whatever "promises" you refer to, they were not made part of a treaty. The 1960 Zurich and London Agreements among Britain, Greece and Turkey provided for an independent Republic of Cyprus.
