in response to reader comment: 1955 pogroms in Constantinople - a rehearsal for the Turkish crimes against humanity in 1974 !

Why did the government (military junta) in Athens provide no help to fellow Greeks on Cyprus once "Operation Attila" had been launched from Turkey? The shameful answer is that Archbishop Makarios was too "Cypriot", not sufficiently pro-**enosis** for Athens' taste. Some transport planes with Greek commandoes were sent but without informing the Cypriot National Guard which, predictably, fired on them, shooting down one and causing another to crash-land. The remained turned tail for Greece and that was the end of any help from the Mother Country! How many Greek Cypriots were murdered during the "settling of accounts" immediately after the **coup** when the terrorists of EOKA-B came out of hiding? Around 2,000 so they say--every one by fellow Greeks. Those arrested supporters of the legal Cypriot government who had not yet been shot owe their lives to the Turkish Army. If Istanbul is to be called Constantinople then Salonica not "Thessaloniki" is the birthplace of Kemal Attaturk (the "Islamist" who abolished the Moslem Caliphate) and I suppose New York City is New Amsterdam!
