The numbers above cited are enormously exaggerated, both of Turks from the mainland brought in (true figure about 100,000) and those displaced from the Greek Cypriot community (perhaps 80,000). This is not to deny that Turkey acted illegally. However, the emotionally satisfying comparison with Israel in Gaza is not apt. The Phaedon Gazikis government in Athens, which succeeded the Colonels, helped bring on the Turkish intervention by its foolish talk of **enosis**, the very thing Britain solemnly promised the Turkish minority would **never happen**.
