Turkey in NATO

Reader comment on item: Does Turkey Still Belong in NATO?

Submitted by Stas (Ukraine), Jul 1, 2012 at 22:57

It is a very delicate balance to keep Turkey in NATO, defang their Islamist aspirations and keep them neutralized with enough give and take with the West. The fact is that if Turkey were to be discharged from NATO, the consequences would be overt (as opposed to currently limited and covert) overtures and relationships with both Iran and Russia, as well as China. There are two sides shaping up in this world, and we must consider the outcomes very carefully before making any moves.

I would like to think that the US will never repeat such a grave error as they did in completely underestimating the consequences of financing and arming the Afghani mujahadeen in their perpetual chess game with USSR. Apparently they did not perceive the chances of the long row of dominoes it started. The intelligence analysis at that time was obviously faulty, but then again, what else is new?
