Don't just dump Turkey, dump NATO

Reader comment on item: Does Turkey Still Belong in NATO?

Submitted by Paul (United States), Apr 6, 2009 at 19:04

Of course Turkey shouldn't be in NATO, nor in the European Union.

The even bigger question, though, is why NATO still exists. George Kennan thought it was madness to be extending NATO right up to Russia's borders, once the Berlin Wall fell. This had only negatives, since it provoked Russia, yet subsequently proved NATO to be a gelding with respect to Russia in the recent Georgia unpleasantries.

Yet NATO goes on and on, presumably driven by the universal organizational imperative of self-perpetuation, groping for a new mission once it's accomplished its founding one (like the March of Dimes with respect to polio). All these organizations and activities -- NATO, the UN, the war on drugs -- go on and on and on despite their manifest uselessness.
