Reader comment on item: Does Turkey Still Belong in NATO?

Submitted by Mansoor (Pakistan), Apr 7, 2009 at 06:35

NATO...a deterrent against Communism's expansion lost its value after the demise of USSR which was truly and most effectively done not by NATO but by using the blood of valor Muslim Jihadis in Afghanistan. Those previous companions the Jihadis are now the most hated figure for the NATO.

NATO could save the face much due to presence of Turkey, otherwise the aggressions, the atrocities and conspiracies against Islam fueled by USA and Israel may had labeled NATO also to be an anti Islamic alliance rather than partners of cold war era.

Turkey's gaining all sort of importance during recent days is all because of its redefining and revamping its Islamic Ideology. West is completely screwed up by the financial crisis and under these circumstances it is extremely hard to keep NATO intact with all its importance to be convinced to the people.

After Cold War Era, the aggression against Islam has made many NATO allies distant from the US policies. Bush's era was extremely black when NATO's own existence was put in danger due to adventures in Iraq and Afghanistan with lack of mutual support. The widening financial crisis cannot make NATO intact unless a very solid reason is provided for it's future. Today NATO is trying to sell the danger of Al-Qaeda and Taliban's terrorism and the threat of North Korea and Iran's nuclear ambitions,to justify its existence.

Turkey in the whole race is the biggest gainer. No matter Turkey is now a reduced or one can say miniature monument of Ottoman Empire, but it is true that their blood, their thoughts and their courage has not buried even after once century when their forefathers were the rulers of a huge empire. Right now, being part of NATO Turkey enjoys a strong military and a much progressed nation as compared to other Muslim countries. Keeping Turkey as a NATO partner is much necessary for the USA to show that they have support of a strong Muslim Nation.

Ironically, Israel seems to be loosing fish out of their hands when Obama is showing willingness to extend his hand towards Iran and the Muslim World. From the back door Islamic influence is gaining ground all over the world specially in the Europe. The Oil rich Arabs are now using their money and islamic Banking as a tool to influence the Europe which is now ready to break the chains of Capitalistic Model of Economy and Banking in particular. Jewish Model is taking its last breath and the world is seeing Islamic model as a life saving boat.

May be in a year or two the cracks would appear on the wall of USA which will end the era of US Israel relationship. Israel can only sell the threat of Islam to America but this fear of artificial treat is going to hurt USA like never before. Presently I feel Obama would play the game more like Gorbachev who was labeled as progressive, liberal and extremely confident to steer USA out of the dangerous situation. But unfortunately like Gorbachev things are already slipping out of his hands and he may be as unsuccessful as his ex-President was..

Turkey's power is necessary in the region and would take new shape if Iran will also step forward for the sake mutual security and safety.
