Reader comment on item: Islam's Future [Can Be Modern]

Submitted by Ali (United States), Jun 28, 2003 at 19:46

so far there is a lot of arguing for two basic sides: people saying islam is evil/needs to change, or muslims saying islam is good and preaches peace.

I'm Muslim, and I've lived in American almost all my life. For the people who say they've read the Quran and beleive its all either hostile propaganda or evil, i think you must be fairly close minded. Anyone who reads the Quran sees that while it carries as strong message about following the laws given to us by God, it gives an equaly strong message about how orphans should be fed, charity should be given freely and w/o reminder of one's generosity, that women should be respected and treated with dignity, that non-Muslims should be treated well and that even prisoners of war treated like human beings. All this 1400 yrs ago. I dont know how you can come to such conclusions about Islam, or the Quran. I think you're trying really hard if you get such a negative perception of the faith. And if you look at the stories of the Prophets their very similar to those of the Bible/Torah (same thing i guess if u only look at the Old Testament). And if your so quick to comment on other religions, why Islam and not Judiasm? Personally i have no qualms with Jews or Christians, we are all people of the Scriptures (as said in the Quran). We believe in Christ's message and his role as a Prophet, however, not as son of God. Jews deny Christ's message and his role as a Prophet. When the followers of the Prophet went to Abyssinia's Christian King, after facing persecution by the idolaters of Arabia, he gave them sanctity after hearing the story of Christ in the Quran, as he believed that our two religions were parallel with one another. Im not trying to make it sound like their the same, or that i'm some kind of apologist.

I'm just saying we are all Abrahamic faiths, with a similar basic message. And if you hate Arabs, know that Ishmael, son of Abraham, Isaac's brother, was the father of the Arab race. So if you're jewish, we're your cousins, and if you're Christian, we share your message and we share your prophet. God Bless those who follow his path and may he show that path to those who dont.
