"Islam" can never rule without human mediums

Reader comment on item: Islam's Future [Can Be Modern]

While some of you may believe that all political systems, democracy included, are inferior to the "rule of Islam", let me tell you, Islam cannot rule by itself. It needs people to interpret its dictates and execute its orders; these people must be democratically elected lest the people be oppressed by their whims. I am not a Muslim, but I happen to admire the historic contributions of this religion. Even if the Quaran is "perfect", who is to say that the people interpreting it are?

My belief is that the majority of Middle Easterners would be best served by full democracies, with Islamic clauses written into their constitutions.

P.S. The reason why the Islamic Empires of old were so successful is that they were good to the Jews. Historically, every movement or power that has ever had contact with the Jews has risen when they were good to them, and fallen when they sunk into betrayal. I dare you to prove me wrong. The modern Middle East just might want to take cue.
