Turkish Muslims are an aberration. Wahabbism is the norm.

Reader comment on item: Islam's Future [Can Be Modern]

Kemal Attaturk ('Father of All Turks) ripped Turkey out of the Muslim Middle Ages via carrot and stick methods---very bloody methods.
...

When Attaturk gained control of Turkey, he forcefully advanced the idea that ALL Turks, men and women, learn to read and write so that Turkey could compete effectively with the West and against its traditional enemies, Russia and Greece.

Muslim mullahs resented this and killed a number of teachers and girl students. Attaturk countered this by having 'Education Force Groups' (EFG) go to each village where the safety of the teachers was specifically assigned to the village mullahs with the warning that should their assigned teacher be murdered or executed, the village mullahs and their families would be executed. (Nice incentive.)

Many times, as soon as the EFG left, the teachers would be summarily executed at the behest of the mullahs. When the EFG returned and the villagers could not present a live teacher, the village mullahs and their families were summarily executed---no excuses.

With no village mullahs to hold accountable, new teachers would be assigned and protection would be guaranteed by the leaders of the village. If the teachers were killed by the villagers, the leaders and their families would be executed. Few teachers died. In the villages where teachers did die, the EDF kept their promise and executed the village leaders and their families; AND, other replacement teachers were left with the understanding that if this third group of teachers were executed, every man, every woman and every child in the village would be executed.

As far as I know, only two villages got to level three punishment and these were well publicized and well documented by Attaturk.

This and other corrective methods (like not allowing women in public to wear veils) were bloody and brutal; but, in twenty years Attaturk had ripped Turkey out of the Middle Ages and made Turkey a powerhouse in the Islamic world and a force for progress in the Middle East. ( the last Shah of Iran tried brutal but less bloody ways to rip Iran from the Middle Ages into the modern world like Attaturk. Unfortunately for the, Shah, 'Preacher Carter' was appalled at this 'White Revolution,' helped topple the Shah and made the saintly Khomeini, ruler of Iran.)

(you know that Wahhabism is an attempt to get back to the true basics of Mohammed's vision on what Islam should be? Wahhabis are trying to bring back old time blood and guts, 'surrender or die,' Islamic fundamentalism that killed tens of millions of peaceful Buddists during the 10th thru 13th Centuries.)

The only Islamic nations that treat their women in a half-way decent fashion are former colonies like Pakistan, Malaysia, Indonesia, etc... and that is quickly disappearing.
