Turkey- a dead example

Reader comment on item: Islam's Future [Can Be Modern]

Submitted by Sushim Mukerji (United States), Aug 13, 2002 at 12:42

Mr. Pipes, the example of Turkey is a misplaced one. How long will the "see good only" people use the example of Turkey to prove that there is some good in Muslim culture somewhere? The Kamal Ataturk event happened over 90 years ago, and it stopped there. Turkey is dying to prove itself civilized and European for ages (since the time of Czars). Just a week ago they have changed some of their laws on human rights to get into the EU. There have been a lot of recent events in Turkey itself to show that it is slowly moving toward fundamentalism and violence. Just give it time; they will slide back to their natural habitat of hating anything non-Muslim. ..
