Reader comment on item: Islam's Future [Can Be Modern]

Submitted by Devon Hill (Canada), Aug 13, 2002 at 11:38

Thier is no doubt that Islam must absolutely adapt to modern day mores but the question remains, can she?

What or how can we convince the Islamic masses that hold literally to everything that is in the Quran and Hadiths and Sunnah with much that is disagreeable to civilized behavior to let go of such beliefs?

We know of the great things the Turks have done but just how popular are these chaps in the rest of the Islamic world or for that matter in Turkey? Indeed, the Islamist Party is now the leading contender for the next elections in Turkey! And this is the nation that has been fed a steady diet of Ataturkism for Decades, usually by a forced manner!

I agree with Daniel that we do not want to cause the moderates to run to the Islamists' camp but at the same time, are we to deny the whole scope of Islam?
Are we simply to look the other way vis a vis Muhammed's more brutal and unsavory characteristics as recorded by Darul Islam?

I am not sure that that is realistic or honest!

As a Great Jewish Sage said many years ago, "A House built on a Foundation of Sand will Fall"! Are we not trying to build a House on a unrealistic foundation?

And even if we can, can that final result really be called "Islam" any longer?

I think what we would end up with is a New Age 'Islam' that really has lost its roots to its own historic foundations!

Thank You
