Reader comment on item: Islam's Future [Can Be Modern]

Submitted by jan (United Kingdom), Jan 21, 2004 at 20:47

I'm sick of hearing of these 'Islamic' advances in science and culture. Are our European and American advances inspired by Christianity, others than church architecture and organ music of course? Does a creative mind really need Islam to tell him that he should seek knowledge as far as from China (a hadith quotation)? How about some of those great scientists, poets etc. who made derogatory comments about mullahs and Islam during the golden age of this 'great religion'? Sounds like Islam was having a good sleep after the great conquests and creativity was in its golden age. And what happened then? 'Islamic' Empire became afraid of its unity and killed off the creativity giving the ball to the newly orientated (from the papal days) Europe.

By going to your roots, dear muslims, you will return to the days of great conquests and who knows, maybe you'll one day take over the infidel West. You can then take our advances and eventually start calling them Islamic too. It would be too bad of course that some (many) of 'you' already are here making the most of their capacity in the most enjoyably secular and creative atmosphere.

By the way, would it be UNISLAMIC to change the tune of the islamic prayer call more to the western taste?
