Reader comment on item: Islam's Future [Can Be Modern]

In relation to your article, why do you praise Turkish Theologians making rulings quite contrary to Islamic teachings? The fact that these rulings need to be made is disgusting, but their motives aren't immediately apparent. Turkey are attempting to join the EU in the face of massive resistance in Europe, they would be the first Islamic nation in the EU. This would effectively open the floodgates for the rise of Islam in Europe. See what happens to 'mild Ilsm' when faced with valid prejudices.

How do you reconcile the reaction to the Danish cartoons in the Islamic world and the resultant deaths of 50 people and the murder of Theo Van Gogh in retrospect? A statement was issued by non-Muslim AND MUSLIM intellectuals -

"After having overcome Fascism, Nazism and Stalinism, the world now faces a new global threat: Islamism……it is not a clash of civilizations, nor an antagonism of East and West that we are witnessing, but a Global struggle that confronts Democrats and Theocrats."

I'm smarter than the average American, indeed that's no great feat - but I defer to these intellectuals in this case.
