The "Wahhabi" Islamism is simply a more recent manifestation of the dogma and canon of "Islam". The notion that this or that sect is or is not a "True " interpretation of the Muhammedic ideology is myopic and illogical. The "Taliban" or "Al Quaeda" or any of the other groups that claim to be true "Muslims" all have equal claim to legitimate "Islam" .

Intellectuals and academics seek to rationalize "Islam" as a controllable belief system. There are millions of people who are not inclined to violence, believe passionately in their diety, and lead productive lives. This is a good faith effort, by well meaning intellectuals, politicians and elites. Unfortunately, in their struggle to find some "Moderation" in Islam, they become invested in its advancement. Witness Columbia, Georgetown, etc, etc.In their efforet to rationalize what is not rational, they have become, in fact , advocates for a political movement and religious ideology that is antithetical to their very existence.
