"Only Muslims can undertake the second step, the formulation and spread of an Islam that is modern, moderate, democratic, liberal, good-neighborly, humane, and respectful of women."

What you call "moderate Islam" is called "Euro-Islam" in Europe. Even though it is a wish of European politicians and experts to create Euro-Islam in order to avoid conflicts, unfortunately, this idea stays just a wish and a theory. Whoever is a true believer and a follower of Islam can not be liberal, democratic and respectful of women - in the same sense we know and understand these terms.

The religion itself is completely intolerant in essence, which is no wonder, given the historical circumstances it has emerged in. Koran is a great book of survival for a medieval tribe living in the desert. But I really wonder how it can fit our modern world and values.

To be moderate, democratic, liberal, humane etc. a Muslim has to be completely ignorant about his or her religion.
