Finally, someone who has a dose of reality and acutally understands what Mideast scholars like Pipes and Lewis are writing about. Frankly, I don't think many of the bloggers here want to take the time to understand Islam. They are Ann Coulter style conservatives. Their hostility to interfaith dialogue, too, is especially disturbing, especially considering that this is America (I do believe that Europe is primed to explode, but its just as much due to the continuing resurgence of the far right as the problems Muslims are facing there). I give them references to some of the websites you have mentioned, such as "Muslims for America," and they don't even want to give them a chance (are you Muslim, by the way?).

They speak of both moderate (and liberal) Muslims in hateful, conspiratorial tones, as if all are "covert jihadis." Granted, excessive political correctness and apologies for Hamas and Hezbollah are terrible things. Calling for the destruction of entire religion, though, is ridiculous. It is essentially a call for genocide. We already have Muslims in this country Anglicizing their names in order to avoid standing out. A USA today article talks of a Shiite of Lebanese descent changing his name to "Alex Blacksmith." Another Muslim, who served America in the Vietnam War, won't even leave his hometown.

It is even more hurtful when I talk about my Muslim friends and they essentially respond by saying that they "deserve to be destroyed." It is more likely due to emotion than anything else. Emotion, though, can go a long way towards burning bridges. The loss of Muslims who truly are trying to change things would mark certain defeat in our war on militant Islam.....I just wish the bloggers here would actually read what Daniel Pipes is writing.
