Dear Lactantius Jr.,

Thanking you very much for your kind and copious answer. I must admit at the same time that you force me to disclose why I asked Dr. Pipes the question. It was not because I am unaware of the quotes you kindly attached. I have always wondered how Dr. Pipes can reconcile what is historically known about 'the prophet' with his ideal of moderate Islam ? To my mind it seemed like the dilemma of squaring the circle . Dr. Pipes escaped the dilemma by doubting the existence of 'the prophet'. I wonder now how many (moderate) Muslims can escape the dilemma the same way ?
