There are no true religions.

Reader comment on item: Cartoons and Islamic Imperialism
in response to reader comment: There are false religions

To hell with political correctness. We must finally have the courage, as rational beings, to call a spade a spade. Which world religion is "true"? On the basis of verifiability? None. All require faith. There are no absolutes, as Einstein demonstrated more than a century ago.

Interreligious discord and violence arise from perceived threats to a faith's absolute. In all religions, the
maintenance of its idiosyncratic absolute is fundamental, meaning that, at the extremity, "others" must either be converted or killed, viz., origin of Islam, the Spanish Inquisition, Salman Rushdie or Danish cartoons.

What of the absolutes of science-equally faith-based? "Quantum theory raises doubts about one of the most deeply held articles of scientific faith-the belief in an objective world that is independent of our observations,"
writes physicist Roger Jones.

There it is. Science, as a path to knowledge, is one like any other. Scientists see their belief system as absolutely true as does Pope Benedict his Catholicism.

Here's the kicker: "Brethren, be not children in understanding.but in understanding be men." (Cor 14:20) The understanding of men in the 21st century comes from science, not primitive mythologies. It's a truism that
victors write history. That's why we no longer worship Baal, Horus or Jupiter.

Science is not the end of knowledge, but a next step based, not on emotions like religion, but on an expanding rationality. If we fail to embrace rationality, then woe betide us.
