Jyllands-Posten Cartoons Stupid

Reader comment on item: Cartoons and Islamic Imperialism

Submitted by Jiri Severa (Canada), Feb 7, 2006 at 11:30

The Jyllands-Posten cartoons were a stupid provocation. A decent, intelligent person person does not troll people who he/she knows are homicidal maniacs. There is no civilizing value in this kind of overt "dissing" of a religious symbol and it should be condemned as public mischief. I am a conservative and principled in upholding the minimum civil respect for religious belief.

I see this as a very different issue than the Salman Rushdie controversial novel. There indeed the issue was free speech and the imputed intent to harm, or harmful effects, were far-fetched. We need to be more discerning. If God gave us the large brain, it was for a very specific purpose - to use it.

Jiri Severa,
