Dr. Pipes, it's time ...

Reader comment on item: Cartoons and Islamic Imperialism

Dr. Pipes, I earnestly ask you to use your pulpit to encourage all secular nations to make a statement something like the following:

"We are a permanently secular nation. Our laws are created by democratically elected lawmakers and are based on common principles that are held by people of all faiths, and of no faith. In our lawmaking we hold no religion to be above another, nor do we hold religion to be above non-religion. The laws that emerge from this process must be obeyed by all citizens, and are the only laws that can be enforced in this land. Citizens have the right to follow other guidance or injunctions as they wish, while remaining within the ambit of our laws. No citizen has the right to enforce laws that derive from other than our secular legislative process. If a citizen cannot agree with these conditions, he or she should move to a nation whose legal system is more consistent with his or her beliefs.

This position is non-negotiable."
