in response to reader comment: Moderate Buddhists, Moderate Jews...

There was a letter in the London newspaper "The Independent" on this very subject the other day, saying that there could be moderate Jews, Christians, Hindus etc in the same way as moderate Muslims.

I am Jewish I have looked at Google in the UK and the term can only be found in relation to attitudes to Israel and Zionism.

As a traditonal Jew, I might personally consider someone more Orthodox than myself to be "extreme" or less "moderate" in their views but I am not quite sure that this shows probably where I am coming from - it generally implies that they are less tolerant than others - I would probably use a scale from liberal to conservative.

After all, moderate can tend to imply that someone doesn't mean very much. Of course, as against political extremism moderation or laissez faire might be considered to be a good idea, but I am not sure where that sits in a religious sense.

Moderation seems to be the opposite of fanaticism.
