Reader comment on item: Sudden Jihad Syndrome (in North Carolina)

Submitted by Mark Holmes (United States), Mar 15, 2006 at 13:53

When a person hits the bottom in his personal life, he may do radical things to cope with the crisis. He may commit suicide. He may convert to a cult. He may become a flaming Christian. Flaming Christians might preach fire and brimstone at the University Square, they may pass out apologetical literature, they may enter a monastery, they may, as William Booth, form a Salvation Army and enter a city carrying a flag that reads "Fire and Blood." But they don't try to kill people in their individual zeal to please God. What do a religion's most radical and zealous adherents do in times of deep personal stress? That is the measure of the faith. Do they, as St. Francis or Siddhartha Gautama, give all their goods to the poor and renounce the world, or do they take a big gas hog and try to run down their innocent friends? Islam has been weighed in this balance and is found wanting. .. and we have 1,400 years of bloody history to prove it. ...
