O. Khan: According to quran people of the book are not to be killed if they pay jizya with humility and live subdued as dhimmis.
YUSUFALI: Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, (even if they are) of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued.
To start with all those countries you mentioned were all christians and jews. Many were killed when muslims attacked and captured them. Remaining either survived by paying Jizya or converted to avoid paying jizya and also when when they could not afford to pay Jizya.
Although muslim invaders and kings killed hundereds of millions of hindus in India and evslaved and converted hundreds of millions more, but they also let hindus live safely if they paid Jizya(hanafi sect of islam allowed hindus to live as dhimmis by paying Jazya)
Quran only allows the statusof dhimmis to people of the book. ll others must either convert or die.
Aya of the sword 9.5) abrogates 124 earlier ayas:
Slay the mushrekeens wherever ye find them, an seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war); but if they repent, and establish regular prayers and practise regular charity, then open the way for them: for Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.
