Sara - You said "Elsewhere in the Qur'an (30:1), Palestine is called "the closest land" (adna al-ard). "

(Adna al-ard)- the translation of many scholars is incorrect, the correct word is lowest land on Earth

The right translation of the verses is as follows "The Romans have been defeated" "In the Lowest of Earth" "And after their defeat they will be victorious" "In few years time, The decision of the matter before and after is only with God. And on the that day the believers (Muslims) will rejoice.

7 years after this verse was send down by God to Mohammad, the Romans were victorious and the Persians were defeated. - A Miracle in the Quran.

The Lowest land lies between Palestine and present day Jordan in the Jordan Valley, and the war that occured between the Romans and the Persians was in the river Jordan basin (The Jordan Valley) and every one knows that the Jordan valley is the lowest place on this Earth.

This is by itself is another miracle in the Quran, because it shows that the place where the two factions fought was actually the lowest place on earth. This was only proven in the last century with modern advanced instrumention and technology.
