Feel free to correct this source as I've learned that it isn't always correct, but an easy to acces nevertheless.

As i read it, it doesn't say they ran out, or any thing. but that Islamic Historians assumed (no proof whatsoever) that they ran... I could assume that they had to go back to Rome for more urgent matters, or that they didn't see the need to fight for sad that much, or... SO many possible speculations. But as there are no founded reasons, any one can assume/speculate all they want.
