Reader comment on item: Europe is Finished, Predicts Mark Steyn

Submitted by Pat (United States), Nov 14, 2006 at 16:33

America is following the European example. Neither we nor Europe will be alone for very long. We'll soon both be mired in our own self-inflicted decline. We'll all go down together.

Avoid the bloated welfare system? All attempts to do that are labeled cruel or inhumane by democrats in Europe as well as here. We are heartless when we fail to provide for those in need. Any attempt to rein in our Social Security system, which has broken every promise its promoters ever made, is also a breach of contract. Boomers who have been paying in for the last three decades will not be deprived of their rightful returns. With the exodus of good-paying jobs and the influx of unskilled workers, our welfare systems will be needed more than ever. We'll have a revolution the day we fail to print one check.

Destroy the ideology of radical Islam and expand Western civilization to new places? Who is Mr. Steyn kidding? We're not even allowed to protect our own borders. America belongs to the world. Where do we expand? Hasn't he heard? The US is an imperial culture bent on world domination. No country will accept the American message.

The world was with us after 9/11, but we squandered that good will by going into Iraq. (This is such a load of garbage, but I hear it almost every day.)

The Europeans are among the most virulent critics of American "imperialism". How do we expand Western civilization when its own founders think we're the greatest threat to the world? Destroy radical Islam? With what? Oh, that's right. We start huge welfare programs in Muslim countries to show them we mean well. We come to the aid of disaster victims so they might (just might) think America doesn't need to be destroyed tomorrow. Maybe if we show the Muslims we're of more value to them alive than dead, they'll let us live one more day.

Fortress America is our best hope for saving Western civilization. If we deport those who want to destroy us (including the UN) then we just might have a chance to survive until Islamists have killed themselves and each other. But even Fortress America is not in the cards. The US and Mexico (not sure about Canada) will be united economically within ten years. Mexico will do as others have: avail itself of the resources of this country with one hand and punch us in the mouth with the other. Our days are numbered.
