Change happens... Its not the end of the world...Reader comment on item: Europe is Finished, Predicts Mark Steyn Submitted by Kit Martin (United States), Dec 3, 2006 at 20:15 This book implies that change, as represented by the immigration of workers into the European system, is atypical, and therefore a danger to the 'cultural' structute. But this understanding would place 'cultural' as a static object to be overturned. When in reality 'culture' if there is such a thing is at best a definition to a shifting state of dispositions that inscribe on members the knowledge how to reproduce a like world. For example a mother teaching her son how to make turkey. Thus, the European 'culture' is no more than a system of state power that inscribes the dispositions of new members, either through new birth or immigrants into the the continuation of the state. Inherent in production is the production of a state of being that allows for the continuation of the that production. Thus the state will continue to statistically change. On account of this basic misunderstanding by steyn that cultural is a static state, rather than a constant negotiation, he sees the "aproach of the Islamist" as a confrontation of two solid things, therefore allowing for only a win lose game, either the Islamist has to be master, or the west. but this polarized identity does not account for the billions of individuals that live their lives, negotiating the interaction, using a myriad of dispositions formed by their social contexts. Yes the world as we know it is coming to an end, but this is always the case, hopefully, for it is always doing that.
