Mike:

You write "America may be a greater risk than Steyn thinks, from what I have seen in my lifetime, Americans will fight at the drop of a hat but we really don't like long wars and this will be a long one. It's staying power I'm worried about.".

Yes, I agree that US is at greater risk and that Americans will fight at the drop of a hat and that Americans have no staying power.

But the problem is also different -- the nature of fight. We fight with the greatest firiing power of guns; unfortunately, this war does not require lot of firing power because there are no large and highly mechanized armies to fight against. This fight is ideological and we just don't know how to fight it. Just look at the "Global War on Terror" in Afghanistan -- we are losing and Taliban is resurging; so is the case in Iraq. One can say, we won the war against communism. I say, we did not. The commies mismanaged and lost; we played little or no part in their mismanagement. Our large forces in NATO played no part in it either. NATO played no discernable role in ideology.
