Like having a friend that is terminally ill

Reader comment on item: Britain's Encounter with Islamic Law

Like so many Americans, we have a "love hate" relationship with the UK. So much like a great friend we have an admiration and a trust that when things get hard you can count on. Our country, in so many respects, is a product of the UK. Starting with the impact of the Magna Charta so much of our democracy is a product the struggles won in the UK.

Now Islam makes it impact known and my friend understands, maybe to late, that the politics of the religion are exclusive and will not exist for long with the democracy it has enjoyed and fought for over the centuries. Is it possible that the light of democracy is "flickering"? At a time when they need a Churchill, a Thatcher to lead the way forward they have the Archbishop of Canterbury.

It is hard to be optimistic with this trend, and like the friend slipping in and out of coherence, you want to shake him to his senses. God bless my friend!
