Let's Fight Back

Reader comment on item: Britain's Encounter with Islamic Law

Submitted by Alan Roebuck (United States), Feb 12, 2008 at 18:58

To paraphrase an old joke, everybody complains about the weather [or ideas], but nobody does anything about it.

But, of course, the climate of ideas is not beyond our control. People believe certain things to be true, and they act upon those beliefs. In America and the rest of the West, the highest intellectual authorities (chiefly the professors and the journalists) tell everyone that leftist ideas are true, and so John Q. Public generally believes them. And since he believes them, so do the politicians he elects.

The reason the West is not fighting back against the aggressive foreigners who are (consciously or unconsciously) bent on destroying it is because nobody has effectively challenged, in public, en mass, leftist ideas like the following:

  • That excluding immigrants, for whatever reason, is simply wrong, and that's all there is to it.
  • That requiring outsiders who live among us to assimilate to our ways, or else face real and unpleasant consequences, is simply wrong, and that's all there is to it.
  • That America, or any other nation, has no definite character, nature, history, and culture, and that it is wicked for Americans to take steps to prevent the change of their nation into something radically different.
Examples could be multiplied almost indefinitely. But the point is this: people believe these ideas, which are completely authoritative within all of Western Civilization, because other people have gone to the trouble to teach them. And if you want different results, you will have to argue against these ideas.

The worldview of the left is radically defective, so it is radically vulnerable to a sustained intellectual attack. If we keep telling people that the Emperor has no clothes, eventually people will believe it.

In fact, we need a campaign of publicly, persistently, persuasively and comprehensively arguing against the fundamental ideas of the left. As long as leftist ideas are supreme throughout the West, our society will continue to decline. Anything else, and we are doing no better than fiddling while Rome burns.
