Reader comment on item: Britain's Encounter with Islamic Law

Submitted by john heffron (United States), Feb 13, 2008 at 11:06

Again, an excelent analysis of an obscure, yet threatrening, incursion of Islamicism into our Western idealites, As you might recollect from previous contacts, I'm grateful that the Enlightenment's Free Will roots, at least here, mandate separation of "Church and State".. . America could not abide any such public sanction of Muslim laws – their Sharia.. Hard to believe that the home of Burke could spawn such a contrary view.

Along these lines, it would be great if you could address, with your fine and scholarly mind, the central philosophic/histoic bases for those religious de-esablishment clauses in our First Amendment – which are anethema not just to Musliims but, we can now observe, even to elements of our Christian Right. That odd circumstance has to be turning over in their graves early America Baptists, largely on behalf of whom Madison and Jefferson bespoke "di-establishment" – our religious freedom, in its entirety. Thank you for the compliments, but the US Constitution is a very deep document and not one that I as an amateur would dare discuss.
