As Political Deceits go...

Reader comment on item: Barack Obama's Muslim Childhood

Submitted by Baz (United States), May 27, 2008 at 16:53

As political deceits go, this seems hardly worth mentioning. What's much more troubling is when politicians lie or mislead about things in the very recent past, or refuse to answer questions altogether.

I'm very skeptical of people, and yet I see a real and refreshing sincerity in him.

I don't know whether he said that out of sincerely identifying himself as Christian (at least non-Muslim), or if it was to sidestep the rampant paranoia and prejudice Americans show towards Muslims today. I went to a Mennonite school for several years, observing all of the rites. Through my contact with Catholicism, I can recite the hail Mary, the our Father, and the curie elaison in Latin, but I would not then nor now identify myself as Christian in any form. Oh yes, and I was baptized in a Baptist Church.

I wouldn't fault him for this in either case. Who knows what his parents said or did on his behalf that may have little to nothing to do with him then or as an adult.

That said, I expect the President to lie. I defy anyone to name a President that not only has not lied, but has not lied on a matter of real political import.
