USA a democracy ?

Reader comment on item: Barack Obama's Muslim Childhood
in response to reader comment: Isn't USA a democracy?

OKay, so the nation has always been under the impression that the USA is a democracy, but then surely the people would get to have a say and not just vote in representatives to make choices for them? The USA is in fact a republic. The founders of the USA were scared by the thought of the people having so much power in a pure democracy so they created a republic instead.

As a republic the people of America vote in representatives and have little say in the chioces that those representatives make, although America does have a free speech law in the constitution. Therefore the USA is not a democracy and does not give real power to the poeple.
