Koranic studies as a child != muslim

Reader comment on item: Barack Obama's Muslim Childhood

Submitted by Matt (United States), May 2, 2008 at 14:59

As Richard Dawkins argued in The God Delusion, there's no such thing as a Muslim child or Catholic child or Hindu child. Children are not mentally, emotionally, or psychologically equipped to make that kind of a decision for themselves. The most that can be said is that a child may have Catholic or Protestant or Muslim parents. No child is "born" Muslim, and to suggest as much is an absurdity on a level rarely matched in public discourse.

A 7-year-old enrolled in a religious program is not a "confessed" believer in a religion, no matter how eagerly the parents may wish for him/her to be. ...
