Obama's Islamic past

Reader comment on item: Barack Obama's Muslim Childhood

Submitted by Maurice (Israel), May 3, 2008 at 03:37

Many articles and comments have been seen in regards to Barack Obama's growing up in Muslim countries and his Islamic past. One such article even went so far as to say that Obama attended a strict Islamic Madrasa school which, if true, must have had some influence on his life. The fact that he later became a Christian may also be a problem for him amongst the Muslim world since Muslims (especially fanatical ones) consider a Muslim who converts to another religion as an "apostate" ; and as such, an enemy to Dar al-Islam - the Community of Islam.

If Obama claims to have no present connection to his boyhood religious past, he should find a way to convince everyone of this fact, and to divulge just what that "past" actually was. Standing before press conferences with American flags behind him isn't enough; even though religious freedom is a fundamental right as granted by the U.S. Constitution.

Americans still have very sensitive feelings on Islam as a result of "9-11". And as the vast American majority do not belong to that religion, Mr. Obama had best be up-front in regards to his past and present religious beliefs. This is especially so if he wants to become the next U.S. President.
