Reader comment on item: Barack Obama's Muslim Childhood

Submitted by john heffron (United States), May 7, 2008 at 12:31

... Indeed, Obama was exposed as an early school child, to a religion of some 1.2 billion (billion!) human beings on this earth, albeit just as the child of rather irreligious parents. On reflection, should not that awareness of, not actual adult conversion to, Islam make him as President a more welcome American voice to that populace, regardless of the fact that Muslim extremists will view him as an Apostate for having embraced Christianty and thus becoming a sanctified target for assasination?

Point is, Obama is as American as you or I, likely tells the truth to a similar extent, and is not really a Muslim mole by any stretch of the imagination. ...

Your thoughts? John

Daniel Pipes replies:

Read again my conclusion:

"Obama's having been born and raised a Muslim and having left the faith to become a Christian make him neither more nor less qualified to become president of the United States. But if he was born and raised a Muslim and is now hiding that fact, this points to a major deceit, a fundamental misrepresentation about himself that has profound implications about his character and his suitability as president."
