So exactly what am I?

Reader comment on item: Barack Obama's Muslim Childhood

Submitted by K.H. Ahmed (United States), May 19, 2008 at 17:44

I am an American of Turkish descent. When I was a small boy I was taught Islam. My parents divorced and I attended a Baptist church. I studied two years at a Zen temple and one year at a Synagogue. I served in the US Army in Viet Nam, I worked for the federal government for 23 years - In my later years I studied at a Mosque in Rhode Island to reconnect with the history of my family. So exactly what am I?

Does Mr. Pipes consider my religion or at this time of my life lack thereof an important factor as to my value as a person or whether I am good enough to replace George Bush. Whether one supports Obama or not, arguments such as these ... are not worthy of discussion in the American body politic. ...

Daniel Pipes replies:

1 - Like Obama, you decide your faith. Like him, you were raised a Muslim.

2. You seem to have missed the final paragraph of the article you have commented on, judging by your second paragraph. Allow me to repeat it here:

Obama's having been born and raised a Muslim and having left the faith to become a Christian make him neither more nor less qualified to become president of the United States. But if he was born and raised a Muslim and is now hiding that fact, this points to a major deceit, a fundamental misrepresentation about himself that has profound implications about his character and his suitability as president.
