Reader comment on item: Barack Obama's Muslim Childhood

Submitted by Naomi (Australia), Jul 17, 2008 at 07:21

I would just like to correct something i read in the article which stopped me from continuing the rest of it as it is evident the journalist doesn't have a CLUE what he's talking about.

"In Islam, religion passes from the father to child"

This is completly incorrect. In Islam we believe that everyone is first initially born Muslim and are later raised by their parents as something else or continue as Muslims. However, nobody, including people who are raised Muslim, will be true Muslims unless they have chosen it for themselves. People CHOOSE themselves whether they want to be Muslim and can enter and leave Islam at their own choice. So if Obama says he was never Muslim then that is his right and Islam recognises that. Nobody else has the right to say what he is and what he isn't but him. Because faith comes from the heart.

FAITH IS NOT HEREDITARY!

Daniel Pipes replies:

This author is clueless. A child of a Muslim father does not chose to become a Muslim - he is one in the eyes of fellow Muslims. Period.
