Isn't USA a democracy?

Reader comment on item: Barack Obama's Muslim Childhood

Submitted by Rajan Samuel (India), May 7, 2008 at 04:45

I cannot understand why is there such a furore if a candidate to the United State's presidency is a Muslim? A candidate to the senate is put under the microscope by the numerous intelligence agencies AND the opposition before she/he is even allowed to run for an election. If Obama could reach to the level where he could run for presidency, it means that his credentials and integrity have been thoroughly checked and verified by all concerned. His candidacy has been cleared, irrespective of his religious past.

Moreover, if he were to become the president, he would be under scrutiny 24/7 because his name is Barack Hussain Obama. Every move he makes as the president of the United States will be put under the microscope.

Even if as a worst case scenario, he has affinities with radical Muslim groups, he CANNOT function like Adolf Hitler or Saddam Hussain. There are senate committees and sub-committees and also the senate has the right to veto any move by the president that is perceived as not being in the interests of the country.

United States is a democracy, folks. The most stable and vibrant and stable democracy in the world.
