Perhaps you are wishfully misled by the fact that Islamic influences also played a role (although a rather marginal one) in the European Renaissance.

well Moshe, if you study histroy instead of forming opinion after reading some books you will appreciate that the contribution was anything but marginal. it was phenomenal.

But while the Western Civilization set on a track of openness and learning from any available source, the Islam remained stuck in its initial backwardness. actually it's the other way round. initially the muslim thinkers were openminded and liberal . but later the religious scholars became conservative and hence the stagnation.

This sad reality is demonstrated daily by the behavior and actions of the Islamists all over the world.

what you call islamists are doing is not because of any stagnation or enlightenment. muslims are involved in conflicts so they get the publicity. there are other ethnic groups elsewhere employing similar means and are sometime labelled terrorists as well but never mention of their religion.
