Dear Dr Pipes, I will work with the exact quotes. Your reader anon from Australia made the following request: "There is no verse in the Qu'ran that says to kill those who do not believe in Allah. If you find a verse that is about killing non-believers, let me know."

Since anon asked for examples of violence in Quran, I will like to present my favorite verse of quran. It 5-33. 5-33 does not usually get the attention that it deserves. In 5-33 Allah clearly commands that those who challenge Allah orhis messenger be killed. I will quote quran 5:33 verbatim:

"The only reward of those who make war upon Allah and His messenger and strive after corruption in the land will be that they will be killed or crucified, or have their hands and feet on alternate sides cut off, or will be expelled out of the land. Such will be their degradation in the world, and in the Hereafter theirs will be an awful doom;

I want to be blunt about it. There is no mercy or forgiveness in the above verse.And no wisdom. Even if a person is posing a challenge to Allah, Allah is supposed to be forgiving. No murder or cutting of hands is required. When someone challenges God, we engage them in education, love and debate. We don't kill them. I find Quran extremely cruel and outdated. I will invite anon to explain how it is not.
