Thinking of compulsion.

I have noticed that some persons of the Muslim faith use what Mohammad said about people having no compulsion to religion as a way of explaining that he was obviously for freedom of religion and freedom from religion. His words and actions of forcing people to convert to Islam or forcing them to pay a protection fee betrays this interpretation. I think he used to it mean that because he felt that people have no compulsion to religion it should be forced upon them and unfortunately he and his followers used this philosophy to spread Islam through violence and terror.
