in response to reader comment: For God and Country or for cherry picking good times

Keith Williams writes:

"If you are going to cherry pick then why don't you get all of the cherries off the tree? Nice try though but you forgot about all of the right wing nut jobs, left wing fanatics, fundamentalist (not just religious), criminals, lunatics, crazies, etc... we have as well as all of the drugs, criminals and gangs"

well, obviously I can't speak with first hand knowlege of your country - but MOST Western countries - are definitely not the vice ridden cesspits you make them out to be - and would like to think are. Have you ever lived in any European country?

"to show you that Islam is 1 trillion times more reasonable than what we are dishing out as cherry picking good living in the west. I will not waste my time with showing you the facts on this page because you can just turn on the television and you can see for yourself all the insanity and immorality in the world in every country on earth to include my country and yours. "

Using TV news as a barometer of how "evil" our societies are is hardly a smart move. It should have dawned on you at some stage that media reports are skewed - they automatically present the extremes of human behaviours and events - otherwise - why would you watch it??? Do you hear about the million good things that happen each day - or the hundred bad? Would you most likely hear a report that a certain set of traffic lights has been working flawlessly for 100,000 hours - or would you expect to see a report on a car wreck on that one time that the lights failed to act as they were intended?

And then, in the West we have a free press - where we can report on anythoing - unlike heavily censored Muslim countries - whose statistics are at best suspect in so many areas.

"......Islam is good for America and America is good for Islam. "

no, Dhimmis modification was right - ""Islam is bad for America but America is good for Islam. " because of the reasons I've previously outlined....... Islam needs to be exposed for the crock that it is (sorry, but I am entitled to my opinion). It needs major revision at least. Other religions are far more advanced - and Islam has to compete with these on its dubious and hard to find merits.

"......I am blessed to say that we have good countries financially, well until recently (smile) but we need help morally."

Yes - we are fortunate we have been brought up in nominally or actually Judeo-Christian countries - which have histories of social progression and the social capital of hundreds of generations of innovation and change in so many areas of human endeavour.

" Islam can help save us."

Keith, Islam is passe and primitive. Get over it. It's regressive - we don't need ritual and absurd dogma - which even Islamists themselves don't agree on. It is completely foreign to our cultural heritage and doesn't show itself to have benefitted its present adherents. Islam offers nothing you cannot get from other religions.

"....I love God and my country and have and am still prepared to fight and die for God and country.
"

Good

"Can you say the same? I have sacrificed blood, sweat, and tears in defense of my country and am prepared to give my life in her defense."

Keith - I understood from previous responses that you are actually involved with the US military - it is part of your career path. You have chosen that as a profession - and therefore you get paid for serving with it . And probably quite generously! So don't pat yourself on the back for choosing a certain profession. People contribute to the welfare of their fellow citizens in so many subtle ways. Some people such as doctors, nurses etc are actually in the fortunate position where they get first hand feedback on the results of their good efforts. Many do not.

"What do you have to say about that? "
see above. Not to belittle your efforts - but you get paid for it, it's not as though you are doing it for free. And so are many, many other service personnel.

"Can you match that level of patriotism and commitment or are you just happy that we have people like that to protect us so that you can do your cherry picking in peace?

As for me , if my country was attacked and they wanted people to neutralise the aggressors - would I? You betcha - and I'd do it for free.

And, BTW, I don't pick cherries. If by cherry picking you mean I am presenting a biased account of the attributes of the West - I definitely am not doing that. Every society has its faults - but by and large we live in fantastic societies when you have a close look at them. Good health care, vote out your leaders if you don't like them, free education, good transport networks, high home ownership, freedom of religion and beliefs, high employment levels, free press , tried and true legal systems, in my country at least - safe banking systems

"..... He'd twisted my "Islam is good for America and America is good for Islam" to his (sic) version. Mine is better and the original."

I don't think so.

"......peace"

yes - find it where it always was - at the centre of your being
